Sonic X #22

This week we’re focusing a batch of reviews on the people over at Archie Comics. Americana with a twang of AmeriManga here and there.

For the past few years, Archie Comics has been slowly but surely reinventing itself from the ground up in several interesting ways. Manga style Sabrina, a new 21st look for Betty & Veronica, a 2nd Sonic title. Still not quite enough innovation (more is always welcome) but a good start of things if I do say so myself.
These are the reviews for a new month of titles.

The problem with Sonic X is, well, it’s not Sonic the Hedgehog. What a shock (or not if you think about it). After dissing Sonic X for so long, however, it was abit shocking to expect the same from original universe Sonic the Hedgehog only to realize that Sonic the Hedgehog doesn’t suck!

Maybe Sonic X can build itself back to the point where it too doesn’t suck. Maybe.
Last issue Sonic X turned itself around (again) and got back to it’s 2 out of 5 place. Sure, it’s done this in the past and in the past it’s fallen back to 1 out of 5 pretty fast. So what would happen if Sonic X managed to hold itself to a 2 out of 5 for at least… I don’t know… 2 months.
Believe you me, for Sonic X to do that it’s a good sign. Promise.

After endless failings upon failings it looks like Eggman has had more than enough of his two bumbling cohorts. So much so that he pulls the plug on their employment and kicks them out (seemingly once and for all). He builds two “superior” replacements and sets them to work, while his two former henchbots are left to fend for themselves… by earning an honest living at a 9 to 5 wage slave job in the mall!

As you no doubt guessed by now, something happens and Eggman is forced to realize he needs his bots back… though it’s not until after they end up coming back to save the bad Eggman from his new bots, which doesn’t work out quite as planned though they do “help” the doc get the upper hand in the end.

Yes, it’s an obvious story, I admit it. Obvious story, obvious plot and obvious end. I can see that. Still it does do it just well enough to keep it’s below average slash above zero score of 2 out of 5 even if it is such an obvious tale. And sure, it’s a 2 out of 5 which means only the most diehard Sonic fan is going to be reading this, but anything is better than a below below average 1 out of 5 anyday (right?).

So, without further ado (with only 3 issues remaining to the landmark Sonic X #25) let’s give Sonic X it’s due with a second 2 out of 5.

Next month? It’s make or break Sonic X time as “new enemies” show up to trouble Sonic. Let’s hope this is innovative in a Eggman goes for broke to destroy Sonic and pals in Sonic the Hedgehog #175 to #177 sort of way, and not a Transformers meets Monster Garage Sonic X #21 sort of way. See you then.
