By David Rasmussen 15th Feb 07 Yes, Fred Perry cannot live by Gold Digger alone. He does do other things, like this title. The last Age of Suns has come to this once-future-looking world of Mati’aca, which came to an abrupt end with the coming of gigantic, city-sized beasts and the many monsters that dwelled in these mobile, living “cities”. Now some years have passed, and the world is a devastated husk ruled by these monsters, with humans struggling for their very survival. There WERE supposed to have been some major heroes who were to stop this menace and save the world…. Thing is, they’re dead. All of them. And now, as we rejoin the world in its sad shape, we find that new heroes may rise…though just not as A-list as their now-dead predecessors. Meet “Socks,” he who wears a sock on each hand (to hide his “curse”) as he wanders the vast wasteland looking for a place to dwell (since every other outpost of humanity seems to shun him once they find out what he’s like with his socks off). After running for his life from the new “masters” of his world, he is saved by a desert settlement and (unknownst to him at this moment) is picked by one called “Oracle,” who seems to have a power that the new “masters” of the world might consider an actual threat to their existence. And that is that… short, isn’t it? This came out September of 2006 and…well…that’s the start. Stay tuned for more.…wow…that was an awkward ending… Oh, there’s also a preview of Antarctic Press’ take on Beowulf (set in a dark future setting) to chew on in this first issue. Breakdown time… what? Too short for one? Well, how about this, then: It’s short, but while I shouldn’t be judging the series yet, I am hopeful that we’re about to go on a fine ride with it. For now, however, let’s give this one a fair start to its life and future as “Socks” finds he’s more than ready to settle into his new home in that desert settlement (as we are ready to settle into reviewing this series). I give S-Guild #1 a hopeful and positive thumbs up with 4 sock-bearing, 2nd-string, possible heroes out of 5 (aka the Silver Star of Recommendation for it‘s hopefully bright future ahead of it). Hmm, you know what? I guess we have time… Next time we review (after our review of stuff like Dinowars and Pirates Vs. Ninjas) we come to the here and now as I give you the 4-1-1 on the present batch of Gold Digger issues with reviews of Gold Digger Series 2 #81 & #82 (as it looks like Gina may be doing some hard time for what she does in #81). Stay tuned for that review next week. See you then. S-Guild ™ and © Fred Perry.
