Previously...
Meet Yukino Miyazawa, she who seemingly lives a perfect life but in fact lives a lie.
To the "world" at large (the world of the school she goes to) she's perfection.
But in fact she is far from perfect... well, actually she IS sort of perfect in a sense but that's a lot of work.
Her plans to make her "debut" in High School as the best thing since Iron Chef premiered on TV fell short when she found herself playing second fiddle to the school's newest sensation Arima Soichiro.
That, to her, was a thing she could not abide by. No sir, she couldn't take it at all.
However her plans to retake her "throne" was quickly derailed when her "secret" became known to her "nemesis"... which in turn opened up doors with implications neither of them could have possibly have planned for, or anticipated.
In the end they fell in love, and became an item.
But the road to this point was long, and filled with many obstacles including their own "masks" which they used to hide their true "self" from the world, and the strange case of the second "big thing" in school (mainly the strange Asaba and his former plans to create his very own "Maryland" girl farm, and the attempt by the school's gudiance counselor to break the two apart after their grades dropped).
But that was only the beginning of their problems as you are about to see.
Graphic Novel 4
So they made it through a whole lot of things to date.
But can Yukino make it through being ostracized by the female students by her new rival?
She's been there since the beginning, but only now has her ambitions finally come to the forefront to threaten Yukino. Too bad she's not the only threat though as a person from Arima's past has also come to threaten Yukino. A girl named Tsubasa who seems to be a X-Games type of girl into extreme skateboarding (which got her buried under a brick wall which sent her to a hospital which is why we didn't see her between Graphic Novel 1 to now).
A majority of the book revolves around the conflict and how Yukino wants to deal with it herself.
It takes a long while but she finally does resolve everything and makes things right again.
You'll have to see for yourself how that is done, of course.
But as another long break comes it seems that Yukino may be doing it without Arima since he's going to be going on a trip to a inter-high school tournament.
But before he goes there's time for a little more affections.
And then there's time for a new one-shot story concerning a planet of rabbit people, a rabbit human girl, and a human that she meets in the forest one day.
Graphic Novel 5
School is out, and Arima is gone on his tournament trip.
But Yukino is not alone as long as she has her friends, INCLUDING a new friend who used to be her rival who made the entire mess in Graphic Novel 3 to 4 happen in the first place.
She is about to find out, however, that it's far harder to be Yukino's friend than it is her enemy.
Especially since it looks like Yukino is about to shanghai her into becoming a house guest as Tsubasa "invites" herself into Yukino's house to get away from her father who is remarrying.
And that's when another strange concept as to the "Death" of His & Her Circumstances the Anime comes to possible light.
I noticed how, later, the descriptions of the books seem to focus NOT on Yukino and Arima, but on the "pairing" that is spawned in this Graphic Novel... mainly Tsubasa and her new brother-in-law Kazuma.
I don't think they abandon the Yukino/Arima thing, but still it gives some food for thought.
Anyway we spend quite abit of time on this story, and how the two meet and get to know each other (but nothing romantic yet). However that doesn't mean they dominate the whole book.
Yukino, and Yukino's father in turn both have their turns in the spotlight before this is over.
But as for later Graphic Novels? We'll see.
Ok. Breakdown time.
Kare Kano Breakdown the 4th & 5th
What's Hot?
I said it before and I'll say it again, it's a good read. The title a nice solid read that's just captivating from beginning to end. It's one of my favorite romantic books with abit of comedy, and it should be your favorite too if you really give it a chance. Nice book.
What's Not?
I don't know but I just hope that the book isn't derailed soon... but consider this.
Graphic Novel 1 to 2 is the material for DVD Volume 1 (Episodes 1-6).
If that pattern continues the series ends with Graphic Novel 10 (of 14), and that's when descriptions of the book pretty much talk a lot about Tsubasa and Kazuma.
I don't know about you, and I didn't read this all yet so I can't say (I'm at Graphic Novel 6 in terms of what I'm going to read next) so only time (and more research from me on this) will say on this score.
Moments to Remember
Graphic Novel 4 is mostly about Yukino's fight (abit on the relationship) but there's plenty of moments. Of course the moments are more concerning the relationships rather than the "fight".
Graphic Novel 5 moments again focus on Yukino and her interactions. However Tsubasa seems to steal some of the moments (which she doesn't in Graphic Novel 4) and provides some of the memorable stuff.
What to Ignore?
Nothing. It's all good.
No, wait, there IS something. But it has nothing to do with the Manga.
I don't know if you've gotten the Anime version yet, but there are some serious technical flaws with the first DVD (for instance) from Right Stuf International. I don't know if they fixed it with subsequent releases but I know my copy has some flaws in it.
Mostly the captions shutting off several times during the DVD, places with no dialogue (the Japanese dialogue track going silent while people are "talking"), and that's it.
Overall?
It's all good. A nice solid read that just continues to be a solid read each and every Graphic Novel.
I'm a little wary about where the title goes from here, but I still have faith in this title (and you should have faith in it as well)!
