Agent Boo Volume 2
By David Rasmussen 4th Feb 07 Once more into the brink, dear Agents. Once more into the brink. You might not have thought that a smathering of AmeriManga placed into a mostly prose format would be appealing, but it is. This youth reader may not seem like your cup of AmeriManga, sure, but I’m going to tell you why you shouldn’t be remissed in adding Agent Boo into your AmeriManga collection (and not just because it comes in at $5 a pop and is written by Alexi de Campi (Kat & Mouse).) World upon world upon parallel world exist out there in the wide vasteness of the multiverse. They come into exsistence as memory forms physical reality thanks to the thoughts of the people of Space City, just as forgetfulness leads to the death of said worlds. Protecting those worlds, thousands upon thousands, are the duties of the Agents. These men and women of the Agents, the organization created by the Lords Spacial and Temporal, based out of the Aerie set in Space City (which sits in the center of the Multiverse of alternate worlds) are charged with the protection of a vast amount of worlds from threats such as the evil Queen Misery and her Commissars, who (from Iron City) thrive to overthrow the peace of many a world in an attempt to expand her vicious little empire. But these threats are no pushovers, and agents die in the service of the multiverse. It is when these brave agents pass away that their companions, sentient “animal” companions who (as the years pass and they survive past Agents) are charged with picking the next generation of Agents (of whom they are charged with their training and then work with them as their Agent Companions. It is thus on this day, as three openings in the Agents are available and the three now Agent-less companions are set forth to pick the next generation of Agents, that the fate of of one time scarred exhausted and frustrated companion and a 4th grade girl collide. Pumpkin had lost his last Agent companion from what we know of what happened, that is to be understood for the time being if what is about to happen is to make sense, and as he is asked to pick the next Agent he is to train he finds himself frustrated and exhausted by the task asked of him. He wants nothing to do with this, but when pressed he seemingly “randomly” picks 4th grader Boo out of the crowd and proclaims that she is the one he choses as the next Agent. Whether this is a random choice made from the spiteful rogue Agent Companion against a system he has grown weary of, or a choice that may reflect his past (and perhaps his last Agent companion) is unknown (at present). All that is known is that he picked her, and Boo is about to find herself thrust into a world she didn’t think she was ready to enter… but after defending the Aerie from an assault by Queen Misery and her forces (when they lured away the forces of the Agents on a false mission) maybe now Boo is ready at last for her first mission… but first, some more studies. Despite the fact Boo had used the Egg Time of Improbability (a device that grants any wish ONLY if said wish is something completely out of the box improbable) and defended the Aerie against Queen Misery’s attack she still has a lot to learn, hence why she and her two fellow trainee Agent friends Kira and Asano are spending time with the Chief Recorder of Space City (absorbing as much as they can on parallel worlds and their births slash deaths). This, however, is derailed as a mission to the war ravaged “Jungle City” puts this threesome and their ability to work together to the test. Jungle City was one of the major flashpoints in the war to stop the relentless march of the arachnoverse, leaving the city’s men all dead with only the women surviving the war. It is here that the Agents find themselves deployed, and here their worst enemy is soon revealed… as themselves, or at the very least Kira and Asano. Before you can say “I’d like to buy that phaser rifle in the window” Kira and Asano are already bickering (not to mention the ladies of Jungle City are not the most enamoured with Asano… wonder why…) and that causes the team to split up into two. This is bad as it seems Queen Misery and her forces are on the planet with plans to darken the sun and steal it’s energy, dooming all life on Jungle City to frozen extinction if her plans reaches fruitation. But, as the volume ends and the plot to steal the energy of Jungle City’s sun thwarted, one of the trio will not return home and their fate (which you will find out if you read the volume) launches the circumstances by which Volume 3 comes about, leading to a trip to Iron City (the heart of Queen Misery’s “empire”). But don’t expect the ending to be totally cut and paste as a twist ending which ends in a cliffhanger puts a nice twist on it, and gives you something to look forward to with the eventual coming of Agent Boo Volume 3 sometime in 2007. And now? Your breakdown. Agent Boo Breakdown the 2nd This is a young reader book, more prose than manga, but if you think that is a reason to chase you away from this title then you are wrong. More solid than you may think, this young reader may be abit short for $5 but as far as light pocket reads go it’s recommendable. It’s not total manga, yes, and if you are not the biggest prose fan then you might not appreciate this title and it’s smatherings of manga influence, but if you are looking for a good read and don’t mind it’s geared to younger readers then this might be a short read that might intrigue you. Long story short? It’s written well, though again for the young. It’s got abit of spunk, but is again geared to a younger audience. But if all of that doesn’t scare you off easily you’ll find a nice pocket book to pass a lunch hour or two with a nice quick read. 4 Cliffhanger Endings out of 5 (once again aka a Silver Recommendation Star).
