DEMO Review of Monsters Deluxe

A franchise I haven’t really touched on in any great detail has to be the Tower Defense franchise. Simply put you have a long winding path between point a (the enemy entrance point) and b (the main focal point of your defense), and along the path you have to line up defenses of a variety of styles (each depending on the particular game in question) to defend said point from attack. These games offer two varied styles of defense but each has the same goal, to defend a chosen point from attack from a variety of monsters. So with that said let’s cover Pixel Junk’s Monsters Delxue.

In comparison to Crystal Defenders it has abit more content and stuff to do, but is abit more involved to play through too (but I guess that’s a good thing). You play

some sort of witch doctor like character who has to defend this spot from monsters (think it’s a nursery or something). This you do through setting up towers which cover both ground or air or the rare dual tower (which you have to unlock using crystals you harvest from monsters you beat to research new more powerful towers to use).

Rather simple to master you set up your towers, wait for the enemies to come, and watch the chaos. Of course like Crystal Defenders you can set up towers on the fly during a wave, though unlike Crystal Defenders you can’t pause the game to set up and have to run about the small level setting up as you go (which kinda leaves you vulnerable as you move) but why? Well instead of using a bodiless cursor to

do all your setting up you physically run about the board as your character (setting up towers, standing on towers physically upgrading them (or using crystals to quick upgrade) or gathering coins and crystals from fallen monsters). Thing is if you run into the attacking monsters your character is destroyed and your coins scattered on the ground, which you have to quickly run over and snap them up again before they vanish. This adds abit more interactiveness to the world as you physically explore the island path areas (sometimes finding hidden coins in the foliage as you run about setting up towers) but also makes for abit more you have to be mindful of. Oh, and did I mention that the monsters can take an alternate path (sometimes clear and sometimes not so clear until they’re taking it,

usually the aerial monsters)? Overall this demo is abit more to play and heck for a free low MB game you can sling onto your PSP for some quality minutes of gaming what is not to like?

Overall I have to say that Monsters Deluxe just have more content to it, and is the more complex and packed of the two if you had to pick between it and Crystal Defenders for dlc ownership. Of course if you are a Final Fantasy fan maybe Crystal Defenders is going to be for you, but still when it comes to depth and content it falls short of Monsters Deluxe if the demo is any indication. Of course I could be wrong, but I guess that is something for a future review. So stay tuned? We’ll see.

Disgaea 2

Looks like Winter 2007 means just that, Winter 2007.That’s good, because after I became enchanted by the original Disgaea (to the tune of a 4 out of 5) I would have hated to have waited for a sequel...
