Obviously, this is a package of two King of Fighters games. If you're a big fan of the series or fighters in general, you owe it to yourself to pick this up. If, however, you're a casual fan, you might need convincing.

There are lots of characters, and both 2000 and 2001 have some characters not featured in the other game, although 2001 seems to have more. About 90% of the characters are the same for both games, though. The real difference is in the gameplay.

Both games have "strikers", which are tag team partners that jump in and help you. In 2000, you can call them a certain number of times, and in 2001, you can call them as long as you have a super move bar to sacrifice. However, 2001 doesn't have much else that you haven't already seen. It has team-based gameplay, sure. However, each fighter goes one at a time, and there's no actual tag team. 2000 features strikers, defense boosting, AND attack boosting. Overall, the fighting in 2000 has much more depth than 2001. However, neither game has enough modes of play, and I really hate party mode. I have to defeat 200 opponents in a row to unlock all the characters? I've only managed this once, only to find out that you have to beat opponents in intervals of 10, then lose, then do it over and beat 10 more people than before if you want every feature unlocked. That's lame.

To make matters worse, the bosses for 2001 are some of the cheapest S.O.B.s I've ever seen. If you want to beat them, you almost certainly have to sink to their level and cheap them right back. Maybe some people won't be bothered by this as much as I am, but it's still a problem.

The graphics are dated and the music is some of the worst I've ever heard. However, fighting fans don't buy these games for graphics and music. They buy it to bust some heads, which King of Fighters lets you do very well. All in all, this collection is kind of like a pound cake. It's pleasant and tasty as far as fundamentals go, but it has no icing to make it more tantalizing.

Score: 7/10
