My Kingdom for the Princess
By David Rasmussen, 13th Sep 09
These days when it comes to princesses everyone’s talking Fat Princesses, but here’s another game where you don’t pork out a relatively good Princess in order to keep her from being kidnapped by rival players in a Capture the Flag competition. It’s a building sim as you find yourself going once again with another game with high princess maintenance, only this time you’re not saving the princess as you are taking her home to family in the aftermath of a gigantic tornado (Auntie’ Em! Auntie’ Em! It’s a twister!!) that tears up the kingdom and leaves much devastated in it’s wake. She has to get home to see her ailing father, and you are assigned to take her… but wait, that’s not all! Along the way you (and the few workers assigned to you) must spend a day in each area doing a massive “FEMA” style repair job of the kingdom, which is quite massive considering the amount of damage caused… hmm… maybe America
To do this job (as you take the princess home) you’ll have to build resources for both your workers (bigger workhouse to hold additional workers, farms and sawmills and warehouses to support workers with food and wood and storage to work with), your work budget (mines and houses to earn income), and the overall repair of the kingdom (fix roads, clear debris, fix up shrines and buildings and the like) all of which must be completed before sundown to finish the level. If you make it before the limit mark on your day bar (and the bar remains green) you earn an upgrade to your final payment for all your hard work, your very own castle. A good incentive to finish with a perfect score as the more times you finish on time the bigger and bigger your castle becomes from
I like how the game challenges you to get all your upgrades up, the roads cleared, and everything fixed for the princess/you to make your way to the next area of the kingdom before the day is done. Lots of thought goes into each move you make to put your human resources to their best useage, seeing how they can only do one task at a time and can’t be reissued until they return to the worker house you have to really put some serious thought into every action to best use each worker to their fullest potential. However you do get help in the form up power ups (the more you get done the higher your bar goes until you can trigger one of several powerups (sometimes two or more powerups are available on certain map
It’s a quirky concept slathered on top of a solidly done gameplay with more than enough innovative board puzzles to keep you thinking and thinking of faster ways to get from here to there (and get the most done in the time your given). And the story is not half bad either. I didn’t mind it one bit, thought it was cute actually. So with all that said and done I’m giving this rather nifty little gem of a puzzler a nice solid 4 Princess Road Trips out of 5 (aka the Silver Standard). If you can try the DEMO, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with this little game, I guarantee.

needs a fantasy medieval style rescue and repair operation to take over FEMA since they do way better work than FEMA ever did.

humble shack to large imposing fortress (and if you miss a time requirement for a level you can replay said level until you get it just right).

powerup bars depending on the level in question). Between islands you play a puzzle assembly mini game which unlocks a vital power up for your workers each one (first one is an unlimited food supply added per minute of gameplay which makes it easier to gather food resources during gameplay).
