Once again we’re back to Game Gear reviews, this week’s theme being entirely set on sports or gambling related things (I.e. everything you can do or bet on during your next trip to Vegas or some other gambling mecca which believes in betting on American sports (like Baseball or Sports Trivia Football). This week’s shout out goes to Doug (which is often as he supplies 19 out of the first 25 reviews we’re going through these first weeks of Game Gear reviews!)

The first of two reviews concerning the World Series Baseball franchise, this improves what I started talking about with The Majors Pro Baseball, and tightens it up abit for better (yet not yet perfect) gameplay.

The same options (season Pennant Race and player edit options) are here from The Majors, but now add on Open gameplay (for quick pick-me-up games) and a Versus option which is now no longer much of an option now that it is impossible to find another Game Gear owner to play against (unless you happen to live in a house with another Game Gear owner that is).

This is an improvement over The Majors as gameplay is tightened up abit over The Majors (not quite perfect but improved over The Majors), and let’s not forget this game has more options over The Majors which is a big plus.

That is not to say this game is not without flaws.
First off note how slow on the uptake the game is when a play is over. It takes a few seconds for the game to realize the play is done, and if you do things like toss the ball about or have players run the ball to first then the play will take longer to end.

Player responsiveness is abit better than The Majors, not quite perfect (still requiring you to chase after the ball yourself) but it’s a little above The Majors as it’s beginning to do some of the catches itself (the AI). Otherwise it’s the same game as The Majors (as is the 1995 version of World Series Baseball), so there’s not very little difference to warrant you buying all three games. If you find this one for sale and happen to be looking for a baseball game for the Game Gear then you should be considering this one… of course if you can get the 1994 to 1996 version of this game then go for those (there was a 1996 version wasn’t there?), otherwise if you’re considering this it’s not perfect but it’s decently done.

World Series Baseball 1993 does a little better with 3 long drives over the fence out of 5.
