PS3 onlie service / WipEout HD

Postby Steve the Pirate » Sun Sep 28, 2008 12:00 pm

Is it just me being absolutely retarded or does the ps3 online
service very user unfriendly?

Is there not a join game option?
Is there not an invite friend option?

Is there no talking to other people online unless we're friends and starting our own private chat?

that aside, it's pretty solid, me and hux had a nice lil game on wipEout HD last night, super fun, but I'd still like to hurl out insults and the like while racing.

Pretty game, absolutely beautiful and very solid online, if a bit basic.

People moan about the subscription fee for XBL but, it provides a very ituitive service when i can jump into a friends game, invite them to mine ect without clunking too much with the menu. to read a bloody message on the XMB require too many button presses as opposed to XBL... grrr.

I wouldn't judge PSN purely based on your experience with Wipeout, because it's technically sound but very poor online implementation IMO.

Reminds me of Motorstorm in that regard. Online play is as smooth as you could hope for, but the lobby system is a disgrace.

PSN doesn't do much to help, but if you play a game that has a well considered online mode such as COD4, Resistance, Warhawk etc I'd say they're comparable to XBL in terms of features and ease of use. They certainly convinced me never to bother paying a subscription fee, anyway.

Wipeout was fun though. Seems fairly balanced, or at least we both sucked equally bad :P

Been playing this some more since I got a 1080p TV and finally got to the 8th (final) event. The difficulty level takes a massive leap upwards here, and I was finding myself unable to finish a single race without getting my ass kicked or exploding in a ball of flames.

That is until I discovered that you can press the circle button when you have a power-up to regain a chunk of energy. Oh man do I ever feel stupid! It's still crazy difficult, but at least I can actually finish races now. I really don't know why it isn't made more obvious, though.

And the final difficulty level is ridiculously fast...makes my feel like D.A.R.Y.L every time I manage to win 8)

Wipeout games are traditionally quite hard, but they are certainly fairly enjoyable. That is, until they get frustrating!

Yeah, I think I might have hit the wall here. I remember sucking something awful back in the day, so I guess it shouldn't come as any surprise to learn that I suck even more now! I was much better at Ridge Racer though. Rage Racer...what I'd pay for a HD remake of that 8)

Good point...Burnout really did pick up where Ridge Racer left off, and around Burnout 3 it was just in a league of its own. I remember when the original Burnout was released the devs were saying they were heavily influenced by Ridge Racer, which I can appreciate.

Unfortunately games in the Gran Turismo/PGR/Forza mould seem more popular these days, although I look forward to seeing what the PGR team do with a more arcadey racing game (what's it called? Blur? Speed? Something like that).

I think it's called Blur, I think I've seen the box shot for that.

Burnout is great, it's difficult to get bored of it because there's so much stuff to do in the game.

I enjoyed the first Gran Turismo, that was probably the first 'real' racing game I played, where you go through a career. It was definitely enjoyable and almost made it feel like an RPG, since you had to win races, earn money, then 'level up' your car with upgrades and new components, or buy new cars. I remember the Lancer Evo was my favourite car in that, decent speed with top notch handling. :D

Yeah, the Evo was a beast in GT. Most of the faster cars were a bitch to handle, but the Evo was silky smooth. Stuck to the track like glue.

I absolutely hammered the original GT on Playstation. Even those ridiculous marathon races that were utterly pointless because you lapped everyone about 50 times. Got the sequel and even the first PS2 version but by then my interest was fading. I guess I just prefer my races fast and with lots of power sliding. Or crashes.

If I remember right, GT went on those Platinum titles very quickly on the PlayStation. There used to be an electronics and video game store local called Dixons, I think they were part of the group that owned PC World. They've long since closed, but they used to have this awesome offer of something like two platinum games for £30, otherwise they were £20 each. My brother and I used to use that offer loads and bought tons of great games, and I'm sure that's where GT came from.

I've never really been that much of a racing game fan. I do enjoy the odd racing game here or there, but Burnout is probably my favourite simply because it gives me the most enjoyment!

Old thread, but thought I'd dig it up since I recently bought Wipeout Fury (£60 of PSN credit has to go somewhere )

Honestly, I can't believe I hadn't picked this up sooner. I'd read good reviews but was a little put off by the fact it only has four new tracks. There are actually 6 or 7, but a few of them are only playable in the zone modes. It's the new modes that really make Fury a great game though, adding variety and depth to an already great game. And the icing on the cake is the removal of the absolutely horrid time trials that were nigh on impossible in the first game.

Eliminator mode is probably the most fun...there's little that can compare to swinging your ship 180 and sending a quake the wrong way down the track...'contender eliminated...contender eliminated...contender eliminated...' 8)
