The Super Milk-Chan Show: Volume 1 "100% Whole"

The Super Milk-Chan Show is about a five year old slobbering female superhero, her insightful alcoholic slug, and often worrying robot. Although none of them have any actual superpowers (apart from Milk's ability to avoid paying any kind of bill or rent) they are still called on by the President to sort out the countries problems.

The animation is extremely simplistic; almost everything is curved from characters to the background in Milk's house. The colours are extremely bold and bright, Super Milk-Chan looks very much like it could be a show for those of five or under; of course it isn't. About one and a half minutes into the first Super Milk-Chan episode (after the title) we get

our first mention of transvestism, and depending on which disc your watching you'll may of already had your first swear word.

Super Milk-Chan comes with two DVDs one containing the episodes in both sub and English dub, the dub being an (almost) direct translation of the original Japanese. The animation is also broken up by a number of live action sequences called 'Butter Sautéed Mushrooms' (or Haiku breaks). This version of the show is a lot slower and quieter verbally than in the other version (see further down) and is funny despite a good number of Japanese references that are lost on a western or non-Japanese audience.

The other version, '100% Whole', of the show is totally an

English language version with an edited script making the show more active verbally. It changes many of the Japanese references and replaces them with American references, some of which are still lost on a non-American audience. The humour is still there with added profanity which if you're the kind of person who likes South Park then you'll love this. This version is also broken up with live action sequences which take place behind the scenes and between recording sessions at ADV studios. These sections amount to more running time than the Japanese sections do, and feature a number of popular ADV voice actors taking a break. These sections are funny but not as good as the

anime sections, as they contain a number of in-jokes and you really need to have listened to a few ADV commentaries or know one or two of the voice actors to get them. Speaking of audio commentaries this disc also contains a one which features most of the vocal talent used in the show having two voice actors at a time discussing their work on Milk-Chan and other titles. Some may complain that ADV have changed Milk-Chan to much from the original Japanese which is the reason they've also included the original episodes with an alternative dub.

Super Milk-Chan is a hilarious crazy and psychedelic anime which apparently gets better/worse in the later volumes.
