Scrapped Princess V. 1

Episode 1 - Overture of the Abandoned Cat-Princess
It’s bad enough to the be focus of some strange cryptic weird “destiny” thing, it’s worse when you’re the focus of a strange cryptic weird “destiny” that requires you to be killed!
Yeah, not every “destiny” is a good one, like this one!
Meet one Pacifica Cassul. It’s not bad enough she has a weird name, oh no, she also has a bad mojo rising in the form of a strange and not good “destiny” attached to her like a bad monkey born virus.
Seems she is the so-called “Scrapped Princess”, ala the title of this anime, and she is destined via prophecy to be the poison that will destroy the world.
Yeah, right. Anyway as most ignorant people in times such as the one she lives in are apt to do when faced with people who are the “poison” of anything (be it the party, social gatherings, or just poison in general) they are driven to make her do a “vanishing act” (like Hoffa).

Good thing for her she has two powerful (I.e. related) people out to protect her.
One is her brother (Shannon), who is a great swordsman. The second is her sister (Rachel) who is powerful with magic. With their help she’ll travel in secret to avoid getting into trouble... except that, wouldn’t you know it, her kind of character just doesn’t know how to do ANYTHING in secret! That can’t be a good thing when most people want her to be as dead as Vanilla Ice’s rapping career!

That just becomes even more apparent when their little group stops off at a village and runs into Pacifica’s auntie, who sells her out to the local branch of the religious “cult” out to kill Pacifica.
Yeah. They’re supposed to be looking out for the world, so WHY do they look like a bunch of demon worshippers anyway?!? Heck, even the nutjobs in Resident Evil 4 looked more human than these nuts!!
Of course since they don’t have Leon Kennedy to bust up the so called “bad guys” it looks like it’s up to

Pacifica’s sister to bring the smackdown to the strangely masked ones.
Remember, friends don’t let relatives sell you out to evi god cults.

Of course we’re just assuming that everyone is wrong and she’s NOT the end of the world... ‘cause wouldn’t it just blow if they went through all this trouble to save her and she pays them back by bringing about the total extinction of all life on the planet? Let alone all these strangely robed people are in fact trying their best to save the world... even if they dress suspiciously evil or just have a bad sense in fashion and need a serious makeover from Weird Third Eye For The Occult Guy.
Well, it’s only the start of the series so her “guilt” or “innocence” is still up in the air, for now.

Too bad some people just won’t wait the required 13 or so episodes to see what’s what... like this “SpecOps” guy who has come to kill Pacifica, then runs away when outnumbered. Some people are just so impatient!

Episode 2 - March of the Half-Baked Knight
So what do we have? We have a trio on the run from their own people, who fears one of them is the “poison” that will end the world.
Too bad Episode 1 kind of sets up a possible very bad ending since... yeah... just about EVERYTIME someone makes you promise to “kill” them if the worse comes to pass... eck... worse usually comes to pass and it’s kill kill kill. Sheesh. Thanks for that set-up, by the way, don’t disappoint me by being too darn obvious eh? And considering when you make menu selections and during the ending credits there’s a shot of Pacifica drawing on some purple cloud force which looks poisonous? Yeah... let’s see if we can have some hope for the future of this girl’s life past the age of 16 when we get to DVD Vol. 2!!

Anyway it looks like the trio can’t even do their laundry and take a break without drawing bad attention to themselves. Today the trio are attacked

by bandits, only to have a rather strange youth come to their “aid”.
He doesn’t do much, but that’s OK since it’s not like the trio were in any danger... except they seem to have picked up a “shadow” in said justice minded sword wielding youth who doesn’t want to leave them alone.
Talk about weird! Also talk about desperate and kind of pitiful too while your at it!
Nothing good can come from their new “companion”, nothing good at all.
Hope his Knight’s Cross Medical Insurance is all paid up in full, he’ll need it.

Well, there DOES seem to be one use for him. He’s going to visit a guy who seemingly was involved in the original sealing of the so-called “Scrapped Princess” 15 years ago. Now if this guy WAS involved he should be able to say what happened to the so-called “Scrapped Princess” he was party to “sealing” 15 years ago, and what happened 15 years prior. Then again that’s if they get that far.

Episode 3 - Fanfare for the Unforgiving Man
Looks like their new traveling companion from last episode is still around, which might be good since it looks like the gang has run into a roadblock of Royal Forces who are out looking for the trio, but NOT a foursome, let alone a well connected fourth person like the guy from last episode... so with his help the trio manage to get through the roadblock with no difficulties.

In the next village they stop off at an inn, where Pacifica attempts to befriend a rather shy girl named Winia.
Somehow she might end up becoming another traveling companion on this grand and rather weird road trip, but only watching this episode will reveal that... or just waiting for next review.
Meanwhile it looks like the SpecOps are on the move, heading out to hunt down the so called “Scrapped Princess”... hey, you think someone would actually question these so called legends and prophecies abit before going off to hack someone to death for something they haven’t done yet! Really!

Well, they need to earn some money

before they can move onto the next episode... wonder what kind of weird trouble they can get into before the episode is over... I wonder...

Episode 4 - Concerto of Meetings and Partings
That’s that. I’m going to close up here for now, and recap this if I should have the fortune of reviewing Vol 2 in the future. Now that we’re closing up let’s do the breakdown.

Scrapped Princess Breakdown the 1st
What’s Hot? - It’s good. Yes, I said it, it’s good.
The story is fairly original, for once the prophecy of the day not being a very good one... just how good is it to be hunted down and murdered because people think you’ll poison the world when you turn 16!
The characters are likeable, the story is solid, the music is good and the animation looks fine. It’s funny, it’s got action, and it’s got abit of a story and abit of mystery concerning this whole “Scrapped Princess” legacy and whether or not Pacifica is indeed the “death” of her world.
I have to say that I can’t find much fault in this series. Solid and good, nice to watch and interesting, it’s just something worth checking out.

What’s Not? - I can’t think of a single thing that isn’t good about this. I like it.

Moments to Remember? - It’s got it’s moments, the trio of Pacifica and her brother/sister delivering the moments left and right. It’s nice, and it’s funny and it’s good. Liked it.

What to Ignore? - Since when did fantasy worlds start to recruit their own “SpecOps” (Special Forces) units that provide the main “bad guy“ part of the start of the series? That sounds like something from a Tom Clancy series! Really! What’s up with that!

Overall? - We have only just begun this rather intriguing series, and it’s a good solid start. The characters are likeable, and the series is nice on all counts from animation to story. I don’t have any complaints about the series, and recommend this to you if BANDAI ever puts it out on R2 DVD release!
