Kiddy Grade volume 4: The Present Future
By otaku_kei 2nd Nov 04 [Disclaimer - had only seen volume 3 when watching and reviewing this title] Kiddy Grade is in many ways a surprising release for MVM, coming across as a title much more suited to fit into ADV stable of releases - mecha, sci-fi action, space battles all appear in this show! And what a great show it is! So in the last volume Eclair and Lumiere foiled an attempt to spread Geo-Sort planet-destroying weapons with the Global Union, but have also started to develop some concerns about double-dealing and conspiracies within the Galactic Organisation of Trade and Tariffs (G.O.T.T.). In this volume following on from a growing sense of alienation with their superiors our two ES agents disobey a direct order from Chief Eclipse when on an assignment that leads them to being struck from G.O.T.T. records and the order to liquidate them goes out to extermination teams across the Galactic Organisation! This darker plot turning is reflected in these episodes, not only do we have an episode where Eclair starts to confront some of her inner demons that have been hinted at in previous volumes. Through the use of a dialogue between the consciousness of Eclair and the manifest consciousness of her suppressed memories we get to explore a bit of the troubled background of this central character. We are also seeing more of the dark side of the Noblesse/Nouvlesse? Well the pureblood earth born humans however its spelt! They appear to be central to the growing conspiracy at the heart of the G.O.T.T. This show is going from strength to strength at the moment. I personally do always like a bit of political conspiracy in the shows I watch it adds levels of complexity to the plot, and just as its doing here throwing up many interesting questions about the motivations of some in command. And with the great action, unexpected double-crosses, and the fanservice (if that's your cup of tea) this show really isn't doing any wrong in my eyes! So what does the future hold for our intergalactic peacekeepers? Well clearly we are going to see further revelations about the actions taken by Eclair prior to her memory wipe, and possibly see similar reactions from other members of the ES. Perhaps we'll get to see what Auditor Armbrust real agenda is, and of course further details of the hidden agenda of the commanders at G.O.T.T. This show does come highly recommended from me, these two volumes have inspired me to go and buy the first 2 discs in the series so I'll report back on them once I've watched them. 8/10
