Chobits Volume 6: My Only Person

Final volumes are always hard to review After writing about the show for the last several volumes, you find yourself sometimes falling into the trap of repeating yourself, but of course you do not want to give anything away about what happens in the closing chapters of the show as this is what everyone has been waiting for, and it would be downright criminal to spoil that for anyone reading these words. But here we are none the less with the final volume of Chobits, a show that took its time making the way to a UK DVD release, but has finally completed that journey. So for all of you who have been following this show from the start you can finally get the answers to all those questions that have been brought up throughout the show!

Chobits has always been a bit of an awkward show for me to review. As a fan favourite show there are a lot of people who worship this show, and as such it has ended up on a pedestal, and expressing anything but adoration for the show can land yourself in hot water. Now don't get me wrong Chobits is a lot of fun, and I have really enjoyed it so far but is it really the greatest show ever? No, not really. But as a touching love story with a twist it does work to sweep the audience along with the show. Chi and the Chibits girls (Sumomo and Kotoko) are still adorably cute, and it looks as if just about each character introduced so far has had their own love story arc, throwing up so many different perspectives on love and how it affects people.

This final volume does seem to successfully wrap up most of the story threads from this show. Miss Manager and her connections to the Chobits project, Shinbo and his marriage to the cram school tutor, Minoru finally coming to terms with the loss of his sister, as I said just about each and every character gets a resolution to their own personal drama. And all of this to the backdrop of just what the Chobits were created for, and the overriding question of will they/won't they for Hideki and Chi! Clearly a lot of ground to cover for the show, and yet it works out so very well, wrapping up the show nicely for the viewer.

For anyone out there who has been enjoying the show so far then this is certainly a release that you need to invest in, and I have to say a fitting end to a very good show. But would I place it as one of the best releases of in the UK? No, nor would I would I put it as the best shoujo release as it comes up against some very tough competition from Fruits Basket. But this show has been a touching romance story that has been competing for shelf space with a lot of quality action titles, so it is nice to see shows like this being released at all. So with Chobits now fully released in the UK it is now time to start a new bandwagon to campaign for another fan favourite show that has been sorely overlooked for a UK release!

R2 DVD Notes

Anime review DVD cover

Features: English Language 2.0; Japanese Language 2.0; English Language Subtitles; Recap Episodes; Textless Japanese Closing #3; Art Gallery; Chibits Special; MVM Trailers

Release information: OUT NOW

Notes: MVM have kept up the high standard for ths show since the first volume. The audio tracks are both perfect, and the subtitles clearly overlaid. The visual quality is also top notch. The extras provided on this disc alos go some way to making up for the lack of extras on certain previous volumes. The only extra you will really come back to though would be the Chibits special. A fun little story that follows Sumomo and Kotoko as they try to catch up with Chi when she has left the house without any pants on. Not exactly ground breaking plot wise but very fitting with the fun attitude of this show.
