Mobile Suit Gundam Movie 3
By Joseph (Joe) Wood 13th Aug 05 This is it; this is the end…well not quite. Yes, this may be the final movie in the Mobile Suit Gundam Trilogy but is not then end of the Universal Century story. Nope in fact this is only the beginning. The “White Base” sets off into Space again, pursued by Char the “Red Comet”. Rumours are abound on both sides that the “White Base” is in fact a ship of Newtypes. While this is not entirely true it’s seems Amuro, Sayla and other members of the crew are developing more and more abilities that are making them seem almost superhuman. The “White Base” tries to act as a decoy for the main Earth Federation fleet, attracting the Zeon’s ships away from locations so the Zeon have a poorer defence. All is not well in the Duchy of Zeon though, as its leader considers discussing peace terms his son plots to over throw him and lead humanity to a new way of life. While docking on a neutral colony the White Base’s crew spend some leisure time, and Amuro runs into his father who has gone senile due to oxygen deprivation. Amuro is distraught at his father’s condition and when he later runs into Layla, he is unprepared. Layla is also a Newtype and helps Amuro with his troubles. Char and Amuro meet for the first time face to face…when Amuro’s car is stuck and Char helps him to tow it out! Char also knows Layla, as she is a prospective soldier for the Zeon army. Layla takes control of a new Zeon weapon, but when Amuro arrives to battle it in the Gundam, she is taken aback. Char tries to protect her but Layla is beyond saving, and both men blame the other for her death. Later Amuro and Char face off again both in and out of their Mobile Suits. As the battle to end the war rages around them and with the crew of the “White Base” in danger will everything work out in the end? The third Gundam movie is one of the most action packed of the three, battle after battle, they come quickly with little space in between. As the Newtypes on both sides wake to there new emerging abilities, abilities ranging on telepathy and precognition, will the oldtypes accept them for who they are when this war is over. Again, it suffers from the same problems of editing as the previous two films despite almost 70% of the footage being new in the third film. The Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy is an extremely enjoyable sci-fi/Mecha romp. Mecha and Gundam fans will love it, and if you’re looking for your first taste of Gundam this trilogy is sure to leave you with a pleasant taste in your mouth wanting more. Of course as I said at the beginning this isn’t the end of the Universal Century storyline U(‘ll)C (get it?).
